Family tennis lessons in the Hamptons: parents and children on one court
A family lesson puts parents and children on one court with one coach for an hour, and in the Hamptons the court is priced for families: the Village of Southampton’s court permit is $75 for a family against $25 for an individual (plus a $150 refundable key-fob deposit), Montauk Downs rents Har-Tru at $44 an hour to anyone, and the family memberships that include unlimited court time run $6,000+ at Hampton Racquet and from $4,322 at Southampton Racquet Club for 2026. Coaches quote the hour, not per head; no Hamptons club publishes a family-lesson rate.

The format
A family lesson is one coach, one court, and a family of two to five at different levels, usually in a summer house with a court or a membership to fill. The coach runs it as stations and games rather than a queue: a parent feeding to the youngest on a short court, the coach hitting with the teenager, everyone finishing with a doubles game that the children win. It is the format for a family that wants a shared thing to do at 5 p.m. rather than a child’s development plan; for the latter, a junior group or a private is the better hour.
The court, priced for families (2026)
| Court | Family cost |
|---|---|
| Village of Southampton public courts | $75 family permit ($25 individual) + $150 refundable key-fob deposit, returned by December 31 |
| Montauk Downs State Park | $44 an hour for the court, any party; $24 for members; 6 Har-Tru courts, mid-May to October, 8 a.m.–7 p.m. in season |
| Mashashimuet Park, Sag Harbor | 8 clay and 2 hard courts run by a nonprofit and operated as Sag Harbor Tennis; fees not published |
| Hampton Racquet, East Hampton | Family summer membership $6,000+ (individual $3,000+) |
| Southampton Racquet Club | Family from $4,321.84 (individual from $2,547.13; couple from $3,770.11) |
| SPORTIME Amagansett | Members get unlimited court time on 33 Har-Tru courts, mid-April to early November; non-members book instruction with a surcharge |
The Town of East Hampton’s courts in Springs, Amagansett and Montauk publish no fee schedule; their posted rules limit play to an hour when others are waiting and bar unauthorised commercial activity, which is the polite way of saying a paid family lesson there needs the Recreation Department’s say-so.
Your own court
If the house has a court, the lesson is the coach’s hour plus travel, and the surface decides the rest. Har-Tru wants watering overnight and at midday, brushing before watering, and daily rolling in the spring freeze-thaw until it compacts; a court that has not had that since Labor Day plays badly in June. The coaches we send to private courts will tell you on the first visit whether the court needs the builder before it needs them.
The season
Outdoor family tennis here runs with the clubs, mid-April to early November at SPORTIME and mid-May to October at Montauk Downs; the sun sets at 8:26 p.m. on July 4 and 7:00 p.m. by September 15, which is the difference between a 6 p.m. family hour in daylight and one under lights. Summer afternoons average 8–9 mph of wind on land and more on the ocean side, so the family hour is a morning hour on the beachfront.
FAQ
Common questions
Do I need to belong to a club to take tennis lessons in the Hamptons?
No. Montauk Downs State Park rents its six Har-Tru courts to anyone at $44 an hour ($24 for members) from mid-May to October; the Village of Southampton sells a court permit at $25 (individual) or $75 (family); Sag Harbor’s Mashashimuet Park, 8 clay and 2 hard courts, is a nonprofit’s public facility with lessons, clinics and a camp; Ross School Tennis Center’s six Hydro Har-Tru courts are open to the public and under a bubble in winter, with private lessons at $175–190; SPORTIME Amagansett sells non-members clinics, camps and private instruction with a surcharge; and the East Hampton Tennis Club teaches non-members. The Town of East Hampton’s public courts in Springs, Amagansett and Montauk post a rule against unauthorised commercial activity, so a paid lesson there needs the Recreation Department’s say-so. A coach with a court of their own is the other answer.

How does Hamptons Ace Tennis work?
You tell us about the player once: who is learning, their level, what kind of lessons, when, and where in the Hamptons you are based. We put you in touch with one coach who teaches that age and level in your part of the fork, certified by the RSPA or the PTR and background-checked, and they call you within one business day. From there it is their rate, their schedule and their court, or yours. It is free for players and parents; participating coaches pay us a referral fee for the introduction. We are not a club, a camp or a coaching business, and we do not sell your details; the one coach we send you to is the only one who gets your number. We cover 9 South Fork towns and 6 kinds of coaching.
