Family Lessons in Montauk, NY

A family tennis lesson in Montauk costs the coach’s hour plus the court: a $75 family permit in Southampton Village, $44 an hour at Montauk Downs, or a family membership from $4,322 to $6,000+ at the clubs in 2026. A family lesson in Montauk is a summer-house hour: parents and children on the court behind the house, at the club or on a public court, with one coach running three levels at once. We put Montauk families in touch with one certified, background-checked coach who does exactly that.

Family lessons in Montauk: what's different here

Montauk Downs State Park’s six Har-Tru courts, the Town’s two courts on South Emery Street, the Montauk Tennis Club’s second site at Hither Hills Racquet Club on Montauk Highway, the Montauk Yacht Club’s renovated racquet center with the fork’s only padel courts, and the houses on the hills that mostly do without a court.

On the ocean side of Montauk the family court behind the house is the venue and the afternoon wind is the constraint; coaches who work the beachfront in Montauk book the family hour before noon.

The Town of East Hampton’s two public courts on South Emery Street carry pickleball lines, with two stand-alone pickleball courts beside them and three more indoors at the Montauk Playhouse gym; Lions Field has no tennis courts despite the name people give it. Montauk is a hamlet of 4,318 people at the 2020 Census with 60% of its housing counted vacant, a fishing port first and a tennis town only in July and August; it sits about 120 miles from Midtown, and the Cannonball reaches it in 2 hours 41 minutes on a summer Friday.

Public courts in Montauk are run by the New York State Parks at Montauk Downs (run under contract by the Montauk Tennis Club) and the Town of East Hampton Recreation Department (South Emery Street); the tennis coach we put you in touch with knows the court rules and books the time.

FAQ

Family lessons questions

Do I need to belong to a club to take tennis lessons in the Hamptons?

No. Montauk Downs State Park rents its six Har-Tru courts to anyone at $44 an hour ($24 for members) from mid-May to October; the Village of Southampton sells a court permit at $25 (individual) or $75 (family); Sag Harbor’s Mashashimuet Park, 8 clay and 2 hard courts, is a nonprofit’s public facility with lessons, clinics and a camp; Ross School Tennis Center’s six Hydro Har-Tru courts are open to the public and under a bubble in winter, with private lessons at $175–190; SPORTIME Amagansett sells non-members clinics, camps and private instruction with a surcharge; and the East Hampton Tennis Club teaches non-members. The Town of East Hampton’s public courts in Springs, Amagansett and Montauk post a rule against unauthorised commercial activity, so a paid lesson there needs the Recreation Department’s say-so. A coach with a court of their own is the other answer.

How does Hamptons Ace Tennis work?

You tell us about the player once: who is learning, their level, what kind of lessons, when, and where in the Hamptons you are based. We put you in touch with one coach who teaches that age and level in your part of the fork, certified by the RSPA or the PTR and background-checked, and they call you within one business day. From there it is their rate, their schedule and their court, or yours. It is free for players and parents; participating coaches pay us a referral fee for the introduction. We are not a club, a camp or a coaching business, and we do not sell your details; the one coach we send you to is the only one who gets your number. We cover 9 South Fork towns and 6 kinds of coaching.
