Adult lessons in Montauk are a summer project or a year-round one, at the club, on a public court or on the court behind the house. We put Montauk adults in touch with one certified coach who teaches grown-ups well, which is a skill of its own, and we publish the rates and permits that are public.

Adult lessons in Montauk: what's different here

Montauk Downs State Park’s six Har-Tru courts, the Town’s two courts on South Emery Street, the Montauk Tennis Club’s second site at Hither Hills Racquet Club on Montauk Highway, the Montauk Yacht Club’s renovated racquet center with the fork’s only padel courts, and the houses on the hills that mostly do without a court.

On the ocean side of Montauk the adult lesson is an early one: the afternoon breeze on the beachfront turns a rebuilt forehand back into the old one, so coaches who teach adults here book 8 a.m.

The Montauk Tennis Club also runs Hither Hills Racquet Club at 2145 Montauk Highway, which is where Gurney’s sends its guests for tennis; the club publishes no court count or rate for that site. The Montauk Yacht Club renovated its racquet center for summer 2026 with tennis and padel, billed as Montauk’s only padel courts: hotel guests book seven days ahead, the public 48 hours ahead, with lessons, clinics, tournaments, court rentals, round robins and kids’ programming.

Public courts in Montauk are run by the New York State Parks at Montauk Downs (run under contract by the Montauk Tennis Club) and the Town of East Hampton Recreation Department (South Emery Street); the tennis coach we put you in touch with knows the court rules and books the time.

FAQ

Adult lessons questions

Do I need to belong to a club to take tennis lessons in the Hamptons?

No. Montauk Downs State Park rents its six Har-Tru courts to anyone at $44 an hour ($24 for members) from mid-May to October; the Village of Southampton sells a court permit at $25 (individual) or $75 (family); Sag Harbor’s Mashashimuet Park, 8 clay and 2 hard courts, is a nonprofit’s public facility with lessons, clinics and a camp; Ross School Tennis Center’s six Hydro Har-Tru courts are open to the public and under a bubble in winter, with private lessons at $175–190; SPORTIME Amagansett sells non-members clinics, camps and private instruction with a surcharge; and the East Hampton Tennis Club teaches non-members. The Town of East Hampton’s public courts in Springs, Amagansett and Montauk post a rule against unauthorised commercial activity, so a paid lesson there needs the Recreation Department’s say-so. A coach with a court of their own is the other answer.

How does Hamptons Ace Tennis work?

You tell us about the player once: who is learning, their level, what kind of lessons, when, and where in the Hamptons you are based. We put you in touch with one coach who teaches that age and level in your part of the fork, certified by the RSPA or the PTR and background-checked, and they call you within one business day. From there it is their rate, their schedule and their court, or yours. It is free for players and parents; participating coaches pay us a referral fee for the introduction. We are not a club, a camp or a coaching business, and we do not sell your details; the one coach we send you to is the only one who gets your number. We cover 9 South Fork towns and 6 kinds of coaching.
