FAQ

How much do private tennis lessons cost in the Hamptons?

About $175–190 an hour at the one Hamptons club that publishes a rate: Ross School Tennis Center in East Hampton charges $175 on weekdays and $190 on weekends and holidays in 2026. New York coaches list $65–190 a lesson, with named coaches at $100–150, and the national average is $113 with a $62–204 range (Thumbtack). The other Hamptons clubs quote through booking portals, and the coaches we work with sit around the Ross number in season. Add the court if you have none: Montauk Downs rents Har-Tru at $44 an hour ($24 for members), Southampton Village sells a $25 season permit, and club memberships with court time run from $2,547 (individual) to $6,000+ (family). A summer of twelve weekly lessons at the published rate is about $2,100.

The published number

Tennis coaches in the Hamptons price the way caterers do, by proposal, and almost none put a rate on a public page. The one that does is Ross School Tennis Center in East Hampton, six Hydro Har-Tru courts open to the public: a private lesson is $175 on a weekday and $190 on a weekend or holiday in 2026. That is the Hamptons number we can stand behind, and the coaches we refer quote around it in season.

The comparisons

Market Rate Source

The spread inside a market is the coach: a club’s head pro or an RSPA Elite Professional who prepares tournament players sits at the top; an assistant pro or a college player home for the summer sits at the bottom. Lesson length is usually an hour; half-hours exist for the youngest children.

What is not in the rate

The court. If you have one, the coach comes to you and may add travel for the far ends of the fork. If not: Montauk Downs State Park rents its six Har-Tru courts at $44 an hour ($24 for members) from mid-May to October; the Village of Southampton sells a court permit at $25 for an individual and $75 for a family plus a $150 refundable key-fob deposit; Sag Harbor’s Mashashimuet Park (8 clay, 2 hard) is run by a nonprofit at fees it does not publish; the Town of East Hampton’s public courts post a rule against unauthorised commercial activity, so a paid lesson there is a question for the Recreation Department. Club memberships with court time run $3,000+ (individual) and $6,000+ (family) at Hampton Racquet, and from $2,547.13 (individual), $3,770.11 (couple) and $4,321.84 (family) at Southampton Racquet Club; SPORTIME Amagansett sells non-members private instruction with a surcharge.

Packages. Coaches sell summers: a set of weekly lessons from Memorial Day to Labor Day at a small discount. One Hamptons company advertises 5% off ten prepaid lessons at a private court. Twelve weekly lessons at the Ross weekday rate is $2,100; add the court if you rent one.

Equipment. A junior racquet runs $35–159 by age, an adult racquet $169–309 at a national retailer, court shoes $80–180, a restring $40 in labour plus the string. Clinics supply balls; a private lesson at your court may not, and a case of 24 cans is $85–130.

What a fair proposal looks like

The rate, the length, the court and who books it, the cancellation window (weather is the usual reason on Har-Tru, which does not play wet), whether the coach is RSPA or PTR certified and background-screened, and what happens in September. A coach who answers all six in the first call is the coach; we ask them before we send you.
